Food Sovereignty campaign at Vijithapura, Trincomalee

Above 50 fisher men and women attended the food sovereignty education program at Vijithapura fisheries cooperative society building in Trincomalee.
The main discussion point of the meeting was to address the destructive fishing gears in the district. The previous efforts to solve the issue was discussed and some persons in the group as well as the NAFSO secretariat was criticized too.

Piyal Sarath, the chairperson of Trincomalee district fisheries coop union shared his views and said, "Trincomalee district secretary has agreed to coordinate the various parties involve. He wants to bring the director ge
neral of fisheries to meet fishermen leaders to solve the issue. We need to propose possible actions which fishers and officials work together."
Most of the participants who attend the meeting were focus only on destructive fishing only. But Ms. Dayalatha, the chairperson of Vijithapura fisheries coop society raised some other issues on fisheries and said, "We need to focus attention on the marketing issues of SSF.  Once we bring the fish catch to the fish market the middlemen dominate the market and no reasonable price. We need to break this monopoly in the market."

Ananda Peiris, Trincomalee district coordinator of NAFSO said, "We played a major role in change. So, there are many issues to be solved. Land issue of coastal communities in Kuchchaweli and Sampur areas are well known in Trincomalee. We need to address them immediately.
So the situation of Trincomalee fishermen is alarming and they are aware of the situation. We need some comprehensive people's engagement to address them.
