SFO-Matara organized the Food Sovereignty campaign organized today at Dondra, Marara with over 150 men & women attended the event.
The fisher people raised the issues related to their industry and expected the current govt take necessary steps to ensure the sustenance of their life and livelihoods.
Sahan Isanka of SFO-Matara while setting objectives of the meeting said, "we the small scale fishing communities must unite to pressirize the good governance government to implement the Voluntary Guidelines on small scale fisheries. We hope there is a big possibility to address small scale fishers through implementing VGSSF. We need to take possible steps to push GOSL to adopt VGSSF and draft policies based on that."
The issues related to coastal communities were highlighted thoroughly and discuss for seek solution.
The land and housing issues of fisher families are seriously emerged at the meeting. And the marketing issue was another burning issue among fishing communities.
The group attended the event strongly supported the idea of having a national fisheries policy which address the issues of fishing communities.
