The land issue is one of the worst affected to the lives and livelihoods of coastal communities. Galle, Matara and Hambantota districts has no difference and need serious attention. Due to adverse political environment during the past, people did not come forward to dialogue and voice out against the land grabbing. Tourism, coastal infra structure development such as harbour and mega city development ie. Port City development, special economic development caused the displacement of coastal communities.
However, the rights of coastal communities need to bring forward based on the VGGT & VGSSF international instruments. This dialogue was carried out at SFO- Galle today with the participation of our members.
The traditional coastal lands can not be given out for tourism or any other so called development matters.
Port City development issue was highly discussed and agreed that we build up strong voice against it. NAFSO is working with fisher trade union leaders and file a fundamental rights case against Port City during coming months.
The group will work together for the membership building, land grabbing and light purse seine destruction.
