NAFSO stand for the reconciliation of all the people in our country. This was the major demand of our campaigns in the past. We engaged the street protests against all sort of groups, politicians, religious groups who did the mischievous things against the people. We were accused as supporters to separatists, NGO crows who run behind "Dollars", traitors and many more. Some times, there were White Vans came behind us to abduct us. We had to go slow and keep quiet for some time.
However, we did not give up our struggle though there were ups and downs in our struggles.
We wanted a better future for our children, for future generations to come. Decent life for the present generation.
We fought for right to life. Right to Livelihoods. Right to Freedom of Expression. We need to continue it. New government was elected our people with high hopes. There were lot of hopes for the future of our country. A country where all people can live peace and harmony. A country of coexistence, equity, respect each other, a country all the people can eat three meals, all children go to school, have a health system which each and every citizen have the access to health facilities.
Citizens in the country voted for a change. Now there is a change took place. However, people need to feel they gained a change. Change for a better society. Change with Reforms. NAFSO took bold stand as a CSO for a change. But, did not want to have only a change of the head of the government and the cabinet of ministers. We expected a real change of our lives. Our people's livelihoods, rights.
It is our responsibility to continue the dialogue we stand for. We are not going to relax now. We continue this dialogue. We did our first this kind of people's dialogue at Kandakuliya, Kalpitiya. People who had some hope for a better society attended the meeting yesterday, 18th January. They came up some views of moving forward.
They need a change in their level.
* People expect to construct a Landing site at Kandakuliya and open the estuary mouth there for smooth running of their vessels,
* Want the previous Police OIC in Kalpitiya back to the station.
* Need to take the land back they lost during the previous regime for their second generation of people,
What our role is to facilitate the people to gain their basic, simple and honest needs as they are the basic things people expect from the government at the moment.
NAFSO expect to continue this dialogue forward for bringing people together on Reconciliation and Coexistence.
Our scheduled next dialogue will be held on 20th January at Karuwalagaswewa and 26th January, we will meet people at Irudeniyaya and on 4th February, the independence day we will meet people at Jaffna.
We will continue the strengthening the civil society through exchanges and People's Dialogue.
