The Sampur people around 1200 families have been displaced since 2006. Mahinda Rajapakse regime declared the area as a special economic zone hence banned entering in to the Sampur land. One of the proposed project is to construct a thermal power plant with the support of Indian government.
Even after Cabinet decision of 11 February 2015 to release land of Sampur people, some of them are still in the displaced camps in 4 villages and many other places around Trincomalee.
However, the people in Sampur and concerned civil society organizations opposed to the proposed power plant based on environmental and economic concerns.
With the information the people received from various sources, of laying a foundation stone in Sampur, on 2nd March Sampur displaced people organized a token protest at Sampur town opposing the laying foundation stone which is unknown reason to people. My colleagues attended to support to people at Sampur.
Raheem, activist and long term campaigner on land rights of Sampur people said, "it is unfair the good governance government too do not respect people's rights. Also no transparency at all. People are agitating here as they do.not know what is going on. Hundreds Sampur people are still displaced. It is unfair to implement projects while keeping oppressed people in dark and displaced so long."
After all, people in the north and east districts trusted nrw president and elected him with much hope." Added Raheem.
