Northern Province Fisher Peoples' Unity decided to set up Co-management platform at Palk bay!

NPFPU representing Jaffna, Mannar, Kilinochchi and Mulaitivu fisheries organizations met at Yalpad hotel at Jaffna and planned for the coming year.
The representatives of the Unity unianimously agreed to form a management body to conserve, manage and sustain fisheries and aquatic resources in Palk bay and Bay of Bengal area of the Indian ocean.
The team proposed the northern province fisheries minister as the convener of the Palk bay Management platform while all possible GO-NGO-PO-CBO-Coop and concern citizen representatives to engage in the management platform.

The team decided to meet Mr. B Dineshwaran the Northern Province Fisheries Minister to discuss and to invite to be the convener of the platform.
At the same time the issues emerged at the northern province fisheries development plan preparation will be addressed at the Palk bay management platform.
* Indian trawler issue
* Forceful migration of southern fishers to northern fishing villages
* Displaced coastal communitiez and their return to their villages of origin
* Fisher women and their livelihood issues
* Destructive fishing gears and law enforcement
Are some of the issues emerged at the dialogue among the leaders at the meeting.
At the same time the chairperson of the NPFPU M.A. Alam declated that the movement will celebrate the world fisheries day on 21st November at Jaffna with the facilitation of Jaffna district fisheries organization which supported by NAFSO.
There will be a seminar held at Ilankei Venthan arts school which will be followed by a march and protest at Jaffna bus stand demanding implement the small scale fisheries guidelines adopted by COFI of FAO in the year 2014.
At the same time team proposed to follow up the development plan prepared to overall fisheries development in the northern province.
