OUva Wellassa Women organization celebrates the National Farmets Day in Wellawaya town in Moneragala district. Moneragala is one of the historical struggle land since the time of British colonizers. In 1848 Uva Wellassa militant struggle began against the land grabbing. The women in the same area lead the struggle against the;
* Lang grabbing in forest areas and agriculture lands
* Uma oya project which is already prooved the destruction of lives, environment and drinking water
* Chronic Kidney disease and poisionous agriculture
* Marketing issues of agriculture products
K.P. Somalatha, leader of Uva Wellassa women organization express her grave concern over the deteriorating environmental condition due to land grabbing, use of chemical fertilizer unacceptable amounts caused to damage the human lives and contamination of drinking water & also the destruction of agricultural lands and forests with Uma oya and other irrigation projects.
Francis Raajan, the coordinator of Praja Abilasha said, "We are united farmers and the other communities through land and water issues in this effort. Celebrating farmers day we raise the voice of peasants in rural communities and attempt to unite them".
The march and the rally was organized by Uva Wellassa Women Organization occupied the streets of Wallawaya today.
