The agriculture and fisheries Policy documents were presented to Mahinda Amaraweera the minister of fisheries at the World Food Day program held on 16th October.
NAFSO presented the alternative fisheries policies drafted by NAFSO with long process of dialogue and wider participation of fishing communities. The alternative fisheries policies were addressed the various issues related small scale fisher communities in coastal, lagoon, inland fisheries and deep sea fishers as well.
Loyel Peiris, a small scale fisherman and the coordinator Puttlam District Fisheries Solidarity presented the documents and explained to the minister the process and contents of them.
* The Sri Lankan civil society proposals for sustainable small scale fisheries,
* The Voluntary Guidelines on securing sustainable small scale fisheries (VGSSF)
* The Voluntary Guidelines on Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests,
* The Resettlement policy on Internally Displaced People,
* The issues and solutions for Indian trawler issues,
* The southern migration issues to northern province fisheries,
* The development plan for northern province fisheries development,
Loyel explained what the small scale fishers and their organizations expect as their goals to build up fisheries sector. And communicated to MoF that we want to continue the dialogue for the future.
At his input in the session Herman Kumara, convener NAFSO said, "the food sovereignty is not an isolated attempt of fisher people alone. This is a collective effort of all small scale food producers. We bring forward the idea of food sovereignty to make sure the engagement of the communities to achieve this with political consciousness."
NAFSO expect to continue this dialogue with policy makers in the coming months.
