Employment Opportunities for Fishers in South East Asia! Dr. Kuperan Viswanathan of Utara university in Malaysia

Fisheries is threatened all over the world says Dr. Viswanathan the Key note speaker of the 2nd day of the MARE Conference. The number of SSF in the world is increased up to 38 million in number. At the same time it is 100 million people depend on post harvest activities. The problem of management due to limited effort lead to less income and fewer jobs.
Removal of open access/ free access is limiting the fishers to engage in fisheries activities.
However, due to resource depletion, fall economic returns and community stability endangered.
Dr. Viswanathan emphasized factors related to the well being could be enhanced with developing democratic structures, use new technologies and innovation and willingness and ability to harness the power of the markets.

Alternative / additional employment opportunities for fishers, better understanding fisheries stock situations, better data on employment on fisheries
are some of the important way to natural resource management.
At the same time reexamine the role of aquaculture and tourism, organizing better social safety nets and support services for fishers as their fall out of fishing, exploring the role of food businesses in supporting the survival of fishers, the use of social media and social enterprizes in help in fishers, job training and skills, better planning for future generations of fishers and their children, clear government policies on employment and commit and businesses engagement on the future of fishers employment are some of the practical aspects of employment generation as Dr. Viswanathan suggested though basically we are not completely agreed to those ideas.
Those issues which were not agreed are raised and also critiqued from the audience.
