"We need decent Life"-Plantation Community Demand

A street protest was organized at Badulla bus stand today with the participation of Plantation community and their supporters, trade unions, Civil Society Organizations demanding decent life and dignity.

The participants demanded Land and Housing rights as the basic right for their life. Plantation community has been brought from Tamil Nadu, India and employed as plantation workers during the British regime in their tea and rubber estates. However they did not have any ownership of a single perches of the land the estate they are living in. It is 200 years of discrimination and now they are demanding the basic rights as the citizens of Sri Lanka.

It is important to state here, the citizenship was received only after 2001 and this is the next step of to win their rights.
The eye opened on the pathetic situation of plantation community only after the Meeriyabadda disaster occured in October this year. We all are in solidarity with the plantation communities in this struggle.
