The northern province Fisher People's Union met at Vavunia today. This was highly exciting meeting as number of new issues emerged there..
Southern fishers invasion is serious which is top of the Indian trawling. Dynamite is devastating the fishing grounds. Destroy coral reefs, some fishers who use destructive fishing gears have become the leaders of the cooperative societies, some of the leaders in the govt fisheries federation are using their powers to destroy sea. We need to do some collective action to stop these illegal destructive fishing.
So we need to take strong stand agaist destructive fishing as northern fishers collectively.
We need to think about alternative fishing.
Jan- March is the season for fishing in Mannar area. If govt give us alternate we can not do it. We know only one way of livelihood.
We need to do the best metod to do the fishing. So fisher people need to find better practices to earn their livelihood.
We as northern fishers should find the best way to sustain the livelihoods, environment and the income for living. We need to come to consensus for an overall plan for the northern province.
