Northern fishers face serious threats repeatedly,
* Indian trawlers,
* Southern fishers migration to nortth
* Destructive gears and illegal fishing
* Displacement and livelihood lisses
How do we find a solution as when we raise this issue in the south as these serious issues create lot of tensions.
"Some of the subsidies which are provided by government not reached to the genuine fishermen". Says M. Alam, Chairperson of the northern province fisher people's unity. This is one side of the issue.
The other important matter is the reduction of fuel price caused to increase the fish catch in Mannar. However, the Mannar and Jaffna fishers federations have submitted a petition to attorney general to take legal action against the Indian fishers.
The biggest issue now in Mannar, South Bar, Silawathurai, Thalai Mannar station, Mulaitivu, in various places of North is the migration and permanent settlement there. For an example before the war there were 32 fishermen migrated to Mulaitivu. After the war Mulaitivu fishers federation agreed to provide space for migration for 72 fishermen from south. But there are 400 migratory fishers are living in Mulaitivu which create number of social, economic and environmental issues in the area.
Can we raise this issue as collective and collaborative actions to address this issue.? Is it possible to work together through media, advocacy campaign as south - north collaboration? Posed the question M.Alam the chair of NPFPU.
