Fisher people are protesting against the high tension power line over Puttlam lagoon from Norochcholai coal power station to Anuradhapura.
In Puttlam area alone there are 681 active fishermen according to the district fisheries extension officer with 1683 fisher population.
According to the IEE Study report of Prof. Sunil Jayakody, of Wayamba university there are 10 major threats to the lagoon fishermen. Among them the threat to the life, their livelihoods, the lagoon environment, the income of the people are major areas of concerns.
Aruna Roshantha, the chairman of all lanka fisherfolk trade union said, "it is the only way to over come the issue is to unite fishermen and launch a strong campaign."
Members of the Valarpirai fisheries society had launched some campaign with the Voice of Puttlam people. So they are ready to work hand in hand with the group.
"We are raising our voice peacefully. But when the rulers response to people's voice negatively our response will be changed too." Nihal Galapatty, chairman the all lanka fisher people's federation, former deputy fisheties minister shared at the meeting at Puttlam today.
People agreed to work other lagoon fishermen and get the support from all possible fisher societies around the lagoon.
