Though he passed away in his 95th year in his life, it is a shocking news to many of the progressive front. While he is revered today as a human rights icon, Mandela remained on a US terrorism watch list until 2008, when then-President George W. Bush signed a bill removing him from it.
This is a common factor today. When we are fighting for the human rights of the people, we are traitors, supporters to separatists, terrorists etc. Once, the people struggle succeeded it is become a patriotic struggle to make the country with democracy.
Nelson Mandela also happened the same when he fight against the Apartheid.
Living in Robben Island as political prisoner for 43 years is a great thing for a leader who fought and defeat the Apartheid. In SL, our leaders are trying to get better positions while co-opting with the Government, once the pressure mounting.
What ever it is Mandela's commitment to the cause is Great.
He is one of our political aim.
