Being one of the highest economically poor people living in the region in the world, civil society organizations in 8 countries of South Asia got together as South Asian Alliance for Poverty Eradication (SAAPE) formed in 2001.
Today, the civil society movement came together to celebrate the 5th General Assembly at Kathmandu.
While welcoming the felegates and guests, Dr. Netra Tismana the coordinator of SAAPE said; "We are in a cross road of South Asia as there are many South Asian regions facing constitutional reforms. We all need to see the realities and find way forward is our challenge ahead."
The chief guest, Swapna Pradan Malla, newly appointed supreme court judge to Nepali judiciary system, while reaffirming Dr. Netra's input said; "it is important to consider inclusiveness. How do we minimize the neglect the most marginalize groups and include them in the development process and minimize unequality."
The theme of the general assembly is Gender, Poverty and constitutional Rights: South Asian People's Struggle which is meaningful in this context where we are having a struggle as we experiencing the difficulty of eradication of poverty as "Law is the Power of Economy". So the rightly crafted constitution is important for us to eradicate poverty.
In Sri Lanka that is why it is important to have the ICESCR clauses incorporated into Sri Lanka constitution.
