"We want action and need more collective efforts to make the contents of the SSF Guidelines in to reality." The participants to the Mekong Region SSF Guidelines WS began today at Thailand.
The fisher community representives, both men and women from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam and Government fisheries officials, FAO officials as well as supportive fisheries NGOs and INGOs together with WFFP members around 50 altogether attended the workshop.
In the inagural speech Villi A ....., the head of the FAO Asia & Pacific regional office who is based in Bangkok shared that "It is not only the State's role to play in implementation of SSF Guidelines. It is collective effort of State, Social Movements, NGOs as civil actors and the Private sector commitment."
Naseegh Jaffer, the General Secretary of the WFFP while charing the opening session highlighted the importance of claim the SSF's political space for negotiation tables. But we need to be well equipped with the contents of the SSF Guidelines. That is why we need collective understanding of the Guidelines."
The workshop continue till today evening as planned.
