The EU ban of import of Sri Lanka Fishery products to their territories were discussed today at Kalutara North.
Some critical points discussed today on the EU Fishery ban.
* is this a political decision?
* not clear the tranparency
* why there is no such ban for Indian trawlers?
Though these are critical points to consider, we need to reflect the realities of current fishery industry. Some of the points raised by the participants.
"Our husbands are not happy to violate maritime boundaries. They know the consequences of the violate the boundary. But the problems they face and the low income due to low catch force them to go beyond our EEZ." Says Nilanthi Fernando, a wife of a skipper of Siriwardane Pedesa, Negombo.
"In Our family every one go to sea. That is because of low income we gain from fishing. I am also prepare food for sell. We can not survive without struggling every one in the family." Says Rajeshwrie of Munnakkaraya.
So the fishing industry is in a deep crisis at the moment. The situation deepen with the EU fishery ban. We all need to have a collective effort to find a solution.
However, Harini Prathiba,(BSc), Assistant lecturer of Ruhunu University raised the issue of the requirements to find solution.
* The importance to respect Rule of law,
* Find innovative methods for post harvest practices
* Data gathering and reporting for manage fisheries resources sustainably
* Fishing with international standards
* Use VMS equipments and effective mechanisms for monitoring activities,
* Involvement of Universities and Academia for better fishing industry,
Are some of the key points emerged at the discussion. All these points should be dialogued with the relevant government authorities.
