Oxfam felicitated the Women Food Heroens in Sri Lanka

The women food producers in agriculture,  fisheries and milk producing sectors were appreciated their contribution to the food production, nutrition, employment generation and also allieviate hunger and poverty in rural areas at the function of felicitation which was held in Colombo today.
Oxfam conducted series of work shops among food producer women in agriculture, fisheries and milk producer groups in many parts of the country  and identified the key leaders who contributed to food sovereignty of the food producer communities.
There were 30 women leaders received awards from the sectors above.
Subashinie Deepa at her presentation at the session shared her views how the work began continue among food producer rural women groups. "The most important matter is to recognize and add food sovereignty in to the constitution as a fundamental right, if our small scale food producers want to achieve food sovereignty."
Mr. Duminda Dissanayake, the Minister of Agriculture supposed to attended the event and appreciated the major contributions as the chief guest was unable to attend the forum though his senior officials were present at the event to appreciate the rural women on food production and their role for sustain the lives.

"We do hope there is a policy intervention as well as effective program to bring the policy into reality to highlight the hidden role of women in the food production systems." Added Subashinie in her appeal to the  ministerial officiala and to the audience.
