Sinnapaduwa, in Mundel DS division in Puttlam district in the N/W coast of Sri Lanka facing serious environmental and social destruction with many reasons. On one hand it is Lyla, Surukku Purse Seine nets fishery and use of Dynamiting in the fishing grounds. On the other hand, the intensive sand mining taking place by business people.
The sand dune in Kalpitiya, Daluwa area to Mundel, Poonapitiya area of 15 Km long coastal belt with millions of Cubic of sands, with un-estimated value of resource available in the. This is a blessing of nature for the people in the area. One way, it protect coastal people thousands of them from the tsunamis, gales and high tides which encroach the coast forcefully during disturbed times of the sea. On the other hand the sand dunes protect the water table of the area which provide drinking water facilities to the coastal communities. This is very important resource for the people as most of the coastal areas is lacking drinking water facilities for local communities.
The DS in Mundel division mediated and arrested the Back Hoe and the operators who were destroying the sand dune last week.
We salute Mr. Premasuriya, the Mundel DS as his brave stand against the culprits of environmental and resource destruction. The court case will be conducted and we do hope to mediate with the people on the issue.
