The Kilakka Suriyan district women federation of Ampara district met yesterday at Addalachenai. Women leaders met with some administrative and political officials yesterday at their monthly leaders meeting.
The women leadership emerged as a result of the challenges they faced due to war. War caused the damage to thousands of women mainly in the eastern province and some reports say it is more than 39,000 in number.
There is no point of weeping anymore hence the womenfolk decided to be united. NAFSO women program facilitated the leadership building and networking among women who happened to be the head of the family.
The women federation meets every month and they discuss their issues such as,
* Secure Land and housing rights
* Education facilities for their children
* Protection of the girl children in insecure environment,
* Livelihoods and new avenues for income for women headed families,
The women leaders had decided yesterday to organize strong agitation after one month from now unless the promises to fulfill the request by the govt officials and the coordinating secretary of Mr. Daya Gamage the opposition leader of eastern provincial council. The coordinating secretary to Mr. Gamage had urged from the leaders not to organize any agitations and wait another two weeks as they will find a solution for those issues raised by women leaders.
It is real impact of the emerging power of women leadership as a united body and challenge the administrative and political leaders. At the begining of the organizing process they were isolated and neglected by the whole society as widows.
