The FAO's first ever global instrument dedicated exclusively on SSF is the VGSSF. We the WFFP/ NAFSO had to work closely to adopt it at COFI/ FAO on June 2014 begining from 4SSF Global Conference at Thailand which was organized by FAO in 2008.
Now at MARE Conference the importance of implementation of SSF in Global Level has emerged at the session organized by Too Big To Ignore (TBTI) on 2nd day 'towards the implementation of the SSF guidelines'.
Presenting the introduction and also the attempts of implementation of SSF guidelines in national, regional and global levels Nicole Franz of Fisheries Department of FAO said "it is not only the States role to take the lead of implementation of SSF Guidelines but also the important that the other actors also engage to push States and other actors
to implement the Guidelines. It is important many national governments in the world had taken the initiatives to implement the guidelines."
It is important in South Asian level, the BOBLEME project has agreed to incorporate the implementation of SSF Guidelines in their programs which is itself shows the States in the region have agreed the implementation.
"We appreciate in Sri Lanka, the SSF organization NAFSO has taken steps to put the SSF Guidelines in to local languages of Sinhala and Tamil which is encouraging and also motivation of many civil organizations."
However, Nicole did not mention of our work, though she is already known of NAFSO engagement to hand over the traslated and printed VGGSSF and VGGT books to Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe last week.
There is a long way we, NAFSO and Sri Lankan fisheries organizations to engage the implementation of VGSSF for a better future of fisher conmunities. This is hard work but we need to make sure the VGSSF incorporate in to Sri Lankan fisheries policies for a better future for small scale fishermen to survive and to sustain in the neo liberal globalized world today and tomorrw.
