Ajit Menon of Madras Institute of Development Studies(MIDS), R. Manimohan, the PhD student of Ajit and me were in the above panel yesterday. In the same session Ajit gave the broader picture of political situation of Palk bay where as Manimohan explained the situation of small, medium and large fishing vessels in Rameshwaram, the Indian side of the Palk bay.
Ajit compared the issues related to artisanal vs. Trawlers, ethnicity and shaping of the crisis and the way making fishing nations, current dynamics of trawling in the Palk bay.
My presentation was mainly focus on the land issues of Mullikulam and KKs communities which the militarization played the vital role to caused to impoverish life of the coastal communities.
During the civil war in SL (1983-2009) a large number of fishing communities in the north, east and N/W were displaced to make way for so called high security zones. In the post war period the land has not yet been given back and they are thus still living as IDPs.
In my presentation I focused on two specific cases in Mullikulam in Mannar and KKS in Jaffna districts. We are attempting years to get the land back and return the fishing communities in their place of origin. NAFSO Continuously work against unjustices the use of coastal lands for military purposes, business matters, agriculture, tourism, infra structure development displacing the communities those who own the land. Those are some of the major hindrance to fisher communities rehabilitation, resettlement, revive the livelihoods and well being of those displaced communities.
