The United Fisher People's Front celebrated their first May day rally at Chilaw sea beach. The United Fisheries cooperative society at Chilaw played the major role for organizing the event.
The leader of UFPF Rev. Bandiwewe Diyasena thero, Antony Fonseka, national organizer, Roshan Fernando, chair united fisher coop society, Gemson Fernando, chair, Sinnapaduwa fish coop and Subashinie Kamalanathan, coordinator, Sri Vimukthi Fisher Women Organization were among others who addressed the gathering.
Rev. Diyasena thero said, "Now fisher people have come forward to fight their rights. We will organize the fishermen and will build strong unity. This is the begining of our struggle as fish workers".
"There hundreds of people are waiting to see the failure of this work. But we are determine to continue our efforts to build strong fisher people's party" said Gemson Fernando, chair of Sinnapaduwa fisheries coop society.
Roshan Fernando who was the key player of the Mau day organizing committee while welcomiibg the gathering said, "this is a historic day for fishermen in many ways; this is first ever fisheries May day in our history. We are humbly proud to be the organizers of it".
Antony Jesudasan of NAFSO moderated the rally while Subashinie Kamalanadan of Sri Vimukthi delivered the vote of thanks.
