The Leaders of northern province of Mannar, Jaffna, Kilinochchi districts came together today to plan for provincial development program.
There were 4 district level workshops were carried out since December 2014 and continued till early May this year.
The leaders have identified some major issues related to fisheries communities in the northern province.
* Indian trawlers transboarder issue
* Migration of southern fishers in to northern sea
* Returnees of internally displaced fisher communities and their land, housing and livelihood issues
* Destructive fishing gears and law enforcement,
* Infra structure facilities of anchorage points, replacement of destroyed fishing gear
* Social security measures such as pension other welfare schemes
Those are the some of the issues highlighted in the development program. There will be an another workshop to finalize the development program as planned on 27th June. After the meeting Mohommed Alam, the chair of the northern province fisher people's unity said, "It is important to have our own development plan in our hand because we have the information in relation to our people." Today we do not have any idea about our difficulties. Added Alam at the meeting.
Subramaniyam the secretary to the unity representing Mathagal fishing community shared that, "we want to submit our plan to our chief minister. Also the fisheries minister of central governmebt. Also who ever support to our plan for the welbeing of our people. We want to submut this plan to Chief Minister on 15 July." We expext support fron all. Added Subramaniyam.
"We are happy to join this exercise" said Rathnaraja the former secretary of the alliance.
