Fishers, Fisher Scholars and Activist exchange

Third and final day of the REINCORPFISH WS at Struisbaai the organizers arranged an exchange views between South African fishers and South Asian fishery situation.
Joeri Scholten, PhD student of University of Amsterdam who did research on Palk Bay Indian trawler issues did a presentation on SL and Indian  fisher condition.
Dr. Serge Raemakers of University of Cape Town presented the case of line fisheries of yellow tail fish.

The commercial fishery those who use "Ski" boats are very fast and travel long distance in the sea and how they affect the small scale fishers who use the small boat call  "Chukkie"  and are slower compare to commercial boats as well as can not longer distances.
At the same time the Ski boats can reach the schools of fish faster, catch the stock sooner and also return to the shore hence bring the fish to market early. This give opportunity to get high prices in the market.
Top of these iasues the Recreation fishery also affect the small scale fishery which put the lives of SSF in further misery.
Soutg African fisher People are awaiting till implement the newly drafted fisheries policy as a matter of solution to all these matters.
