It is exciting to see the remaining Mangrove patch at Vellankulam at A32 road. The Mangrove ground give the feeding and breeding space for the fish fingerlings. The Mangroves nourish the fish stocks in the lagoon areas, brackish water bodies in particular.
We need to focus attention on the management of Mangroves to sustain fisheries and also fishing communities.

The lagoons are heterogeneous in nature. They are uneven in size and shape and geographic distribution. There are about 82 lagoons reported in Sri Lanka. Largest part of lagoons are reported in North west and north regions. Lagoons are different shapes. Special formations also seen.
North coast lagoons extend from Thirkketiswaram to Illankantai lagoon. Majority of lagoons in eastern area extend below 1 sq Km.
South East coastal zone extend to Kirigallabay to Maha lewaya.
South western zone Koggala to Wadduwa.
Western coastal zone Wadduwa to Wennappuwa.
North Western Coastal zone Wennappuwa to Thirukketiswaram.
