"Ban Destructive Fishing gears: Enforce the Law," Say Small Scale Fishers

On the 1st February, Small Scale Fishers from many Western coastal communities launched a massive protest at Negombo demanding to Ban Destructive Fishing Gears and to enforce the existing law.

Parallel to this major event, NAFSO launched a poster campaign around Negombo town, coastal villages, fish market, around churches as well as in the heart of the city in solidarity with the SSF.

The two teams attended the work covered many strategic places in Negombo where most fishers are move around and their attention.
Our team got high respect and also recognition among the fishers once we attended the work at Pitipana fish market.
One of former fisheries activist, who is now run a small business center at the Pilitpana fish market, Susil Prashantha said,
"Your work is commendable as there is no fisheries or human rights organization take a stand with the SSF on their issues. I can see how the SSF suffer from the loss of income and they are indebted to me too as there is no income for them."

The fisher people will agitate and will come attend the strong protest at Negombo.
