Thousands of Trincomalee small scale fishers came to street yesterday demanding law enforcement against destructive fishing gears. They have been struggling to pressurise the authorities to take legal action againat destructive fishing.
The Organization for protection of marine resources organized the protest at Clock tower in Trincomalee town.
Ananda Peiris, the coordinator of NAFSO lead the protest and said, "We requested from all the authorities to enforce the law. No one listen to us. The marine resources are depleting rapidly and we lose our income drastically and our children starving."
The protestors marched from Vijithapura cooperative society upto Clock Tower first. After half an hour protest at clock tower the team moved to the District Secretary's office and handed over a petetion to the district secretary.
Protestors moved then to the Eastern province provincial council. The leaders had decided to continue the fight until their basic demands will be met.
Raajan, the Praja Abilasha coordinator told at the meeting "when people's voice not heard by the authorities, the political leadership should engaged. Unless, people have proved their power both at Presidential and General election to send them home."
