We, the Sri Lankans are living in a so called democratic society. We have all the freedoms in our society to work within the legal frame work of Sri Lankan constitution. However, once we engage to work to mobilize people for their rights, we face serious threats to our lives.
Last month, Sunesh, Basil Soosai of Mannar faced death threats from unknown people.
Today, I had to accompany Rev. Bandiwewe Diyasena thero to the famous 4th Floor of CID in Fort, Colombo as he was asked to attend an inquiry there during his absence in Kandakuliya Samudrasanna Viharaya.
The so called charge is that the received of money from the boat owner, whose boat was kept in Andaman island and Rev. Diyasena attended to get release the fishermen held there for more than a year and GOSL did not take action until Monk conducted hunger strike for 5 days continuously and pressurize the GOSL to engage SL fishermen once they arrested.
Today, the CID has asked Rev. Monk to come to CID head quarters once he come back to Sri Lanka. The main charge is to get money from the boat owner to mediate to release fishermen and bring them back to Sri Lanka.
Once the Rev. Diyasena attended the inquiry, surprizingly the officials at CID had played a different role. Now, Rev. Diyasena is attempting to take legal action against the minister of fisheries.
We expect, this is a clear indicator how the state institutions are playing games to protect the regime and not the general public.
