The State Heads meeting in South Asian region call SAARC summit just ended at Thimpu, Bhuthan last 28 and 29 April. This is one of the important sessions of State heads as almost all of them come together for regional cooperation.
The tensions between the countrie s of India and Pakistan is evident since the origin of the Pakistan. The disagreements between Pakistan and Bangladesh is also serious threat to the regional cooperation.
The geo-political context in the region is so much shaky as India face internal crisis with Nagaland, Kashmir and also Maoist threats all over India. Government of India has decided to all out war against Maoist rebels means the unstable security situation will be experienced by poor and oppressed people further.
Afganistan is almost a battle field and the suicidal bombing and killings were increased recently. Hunting of Thaliaban leaders is the main aim of the American led troops though they could not capture anyone of the top leadership so far.
At the same time Pakistan also facing crisis due to the Afganistan, Thalaiban issues and the killings and suicides are reported daily basis. At the same time crisis between India and Pakistan always a hot news on Kashmir issue and it is important PM Manmohan Sin and PM Mohomed Gilani had bilateral discussions during thr SAARC summit.
After death of former Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, new Prime Minister and the parliament is trying to become stable in Nepal in which there would be lot of influnces from India too.
Bangladesh is having internal political unstability though it looks better than the other countries in the region.
Sri Lanka looks the most stable and the powerful[internally] governments in the region and attend the SAARC summit with fresh mandate and popular support from the people. However, the issues of poverty, internally displacements, human rights violations are reported during the past years of the regime of President Mahinda Rajapakse.
President Rajapkse has been declared Sri Lanka to be the Asian Wonders during his regime. As Sri Lankan People, we are optimistically awaiting to see this happen.
But, with doubts about the same set of his mates as the Cabinet Ministers to perform the duty to make Sri Lanka an Asian Wonders.
Amidst these political realities, itis very important fact that the most majority hungry people are residing in the South Asian region and it is around 540 million people according to Food & Agriculture Organization[FAO], Rome based UN agency on alleviate hunger in the world. However, it is very important to assess the impact of the SAARC summit as the implementation of some of the SAARC decisions would help to make better future of those hungery and poor people in the region.
For instance, we need to see the implementation of SAARC decision of to establish a Grain Bank for SAARC region to face the serious food scarcity when countries face time to time.
Also, howmany positive decisions were taken at the SAARC summit, there the implementation and cooperation between and among the countries are poor.
So, we need to critically assess the impact of the SAARC summits from the begining up to now to change the lives, improve the life conditons, well being of the people in the region.
What ever in the declarations, they are only words till implemented for betterment of the people in the region.
But we know the Words are not the Deeds at all the time.
