"Aiya(elder brother) there is a very Good News to tell you."
My colleague Raajan, who is the Coordinator of Praja Abhilasha network spoke to me over the phone this morning.
"There are 240 families among displaced Sampur people who got the permission for 894 acre lands to release have gone back to their original lands."
Wow! This is a very good news indeed. Sampur people were felt they won't get their land back as TNA was not take the issue address politically and Indian Prime Minister's speech on Sampur during his SL visit as he expects to develop this area as a induatrial zone and also the close ties between India and Sri Lanka had inxreased our doubts though Sampur people continue their land struggle.
However, the cabinet decision over Sampur land followed by the determined actions of Govenor of eastern province Mr. Austin Silva( I saw he was very strongly stand for the rights of displaced Sampur People in media dialogues held).
Police had blocked the people to enter into their land though people argued with police showing news paper articles of Presidents announcements and suceeded to enter into their lands.
Though it is only 240 families out of 1300 familes this is the begining.
From 340 families in Kattaiparichcan it is only 100 families allowed to return to their land. When the Navy camp remove which take another 6 months only rest of the families could return to their original lands.
Krishnapillai and Yoganayagam amma are still the victims of the displacement among Sampur communities.
