Ranjith is a social activist in Batticoloa who is working very closely with me during past few years and shared an important information with me today.
He sent me a photograph of SeaPlane Project in operation in Batticoloa lagoon.
I want to share it with all of our friends who are visiting my blog as I see the importance of it.
Because, Batticoloa lagoon supposed to be a one of the biggest lagoon, not only that most productive one and also provide livelihood to the small scale fishermen around the lagoon.
Negombo fisher people opposed to the SeaPlane project in Negombo lagoon as they saw the threats to their lives and livelihoods.
But, Negombo people defeated the SeaPlane project of the previous regime even amidst the threats to their lives from Gota, former President Mahinda's brother as the secretary to the defense ministry. The courage and determination of Negombo fisher men and women with the civil society groups collectively defeated the SeaPlanes project in Negombo lagoon.
The important matter is that Batticoloa lagoon also face the similar threats and destruction to the ecology and also biodiversity, loss of livelihoods due to the SeaPlane project implement in Baticoloa lagoon. So, far there is no any opposition from the fishermen there or any civil group against the SeaPlane in Baticoloa.
We would like to mediate, if Batticoloa people expect to launch any campaign against the project if they face any threat to their livelihoods and ecology, biodiversity.
