The protestors gathered at Baththalangunduwa island from Various villages in Kalpitiya, Mannar, Thalawila and Kandakuliya areas urged to enforcevthe law and stop operations of purse seines such as lyla, surukku and dynamite and other destructive fishing gears.
"We are traditiinal small scale fishermen who are depending on natural resources. We sustain this resources generation to generatiin. However, the destructive fishing gear operators do not care of the future of our children and the resources." Said Antony Fonseka, the chairperson of Baththalangunduwa fisheries society.
"We were attempted to build up new government. We wanted to establish rule of law. If this govt do not ready to keep the promises to good governance, we are not ready to tolerate any more. We will give three days to enforce the ban on destructive fishing gears and ensure protection of the small scale fishers." Rev. Bandiwewe Diyasena thero said at the meeting.
Neel Sushantha of Kandakuliya, Eachchankaduwa fisheries society said, "we are ready to send fisher people's representatives to the parliament as that would be one way to find solution for our issues."
At the end of the session, almost all the fisher leaders approved while raisi ng the hand that fishers form a party to contest at the eld tio s.
